Jeunes Citoyens / Young Citizens

Dillon Whiteway, Newfoundland and Labrador

Fair address: Avalon Regional Fair

Project: Ma bibliothèque locale

My project is about ICH or Intangible Cultural Heritage, this is heritage you cant touch. its kinds of things like telling stories, songs and crafts like tying knots. if we don't teach the younger generations it will all be lost.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

One of the most interesting things I learned from my topic, was that you should teach all the younger generations about everyday life and different methods of living. We should pass it on before the people who tell it to you are gone.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I always used to hang out with my great pop, he used to tell me all kinds of stories. I was young then and didn't realize the importance of those conversations, now he is passed on and i wish that I could've paid a bit more attention because now I cant remember anything he said.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

These days we can just go to the dollar store and buy little crafts. Back then they didn't have any dollar stores, so they would make it themselves. Things like tying knots and knitting were a way of life, they were necessary for survival.

Very interesting, Dillon. I'm so glad to see your interest in the history and culture that makes us uniquely who we are. Your answers are informed and this comes only from a genuine desire to understand and learn more so that you too can become a beater of information for your own generation and beyond.
