Madison Pelly Crossing, Yukon Territory

Fair address: Yukon Territorial Heritage Fair

Project: Doóli Laws

The project is about my traditional Laws in Pelly Crossing, Yukon Territory. These are the laws we hope for our younger generation to follow, respect and carry on.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I think the most interesting part in my topic the "Doóli laws" is that our Doóli Laws are very important in our first nation culture. When I interviewed my mom she told me that it is very important to keep our culture alive because if we lose it, how would the younger generation learn our language? Learn how to sew, or even cut moose for moose meat?. That was something I thought was very interesting.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that our Doóli laws are important to listen to. We have a lot of laws we need to respect, such as 'Do not carry fish and water at the same time', and 'do not talk about bears; the bears can hear and listen to you when you talk about them.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life today, is very different then the past. Kids my age break the Doóli laws because they are hooked to their phones and do not listen. But my life is very different. I don't have a phone to text on, I'd rather go biking or go outside. I love to attend most of our culture camps to listen to Elders story's and learn even more about our culture.
