Project: Laura Secord

Laura Secord was a Canadian heroine that has shared with us so many important lessons for our lives. Learn about her journey, her role in many battles, and visit some memorials with me!

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I think that the most interesting thing that I learned about my topic is the statistics of Laura Secord's trip to Beaver Dams (now Thorold). It was 32 kilometres from Queenston Heights, where she lived, it took about 20 hours to complete, and the terrain was terrible! In late June the weather was very hot and humid, so the journey must have been very tough.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Laura Secord has taught me so much after doing my research. She has taught me to never give up when the going gets tough, because of how difficult her journey was (32 kilometres in 20 hours of harsh terrain and humidity). She has also taught me how perseverance and courage are vital to doing tasks everyday, because of how brave she was and how long it took!

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I think that my life today is very different from the lives studied in my Laura Secord project. First, in Mrs. Secord's case, she had to endure the Battle of Queenston Heights and Battle of Beaver Dams, as well as many more. Now, we do not have battles and wars in the Niagara Region! Something else is that the home Laura Secord lived on (visit Laura Secord Homestead of Niagara Parks) was a small, one-story home that did not have running water or much electricity, which is very different from my home, that has an upstairs and has both running water and electricity!

You told Laura's story well. I knew about her trek but not about how she saved her husband during the battle.
