Project: Women's Ice Sports in Canada

My project is about the history and growth of ice sports for women in Canada. The project focuses on ringette and hockey.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned was that women having been playing hockey in Canada for longer than I thought. The first recorded women's hockey game dates back to 1891. Women used to play hockey in long skirts! Men wore hockey shorts which were probably more practical.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned about historical inequality in sports for women, how these sports grew, and how sports like ringette helped to improve opportunities for girls and women to play sports. I also learned about female leaders who have changed the way people think about girls in sports.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Today girls like me have lots of opportunity to choose the activities we want. Boys can play ringette and girls can play hockey. If I was a girl in the early 1900s, I would not likely have had the opportunity to play an ice sport and there would not have been the choice to play ringette.

You researched your project extremely well, Tallia. I am impressed by the amount and variety of work that went into it. The comparison of the ringette and hockey sticks was good, and I think I recognize the hockey player!
