Project: HMS Belfast

My project was done on a ship in the British Royal Navy the HMS Belfast, and how my grandfather's work in the Navy brought my family to Canada. The Belfast fought many important battles, including D-Day, and played a significant role in the Battle of North Cape, one they were specially honored for with a plaque. In my project I found many connections that tied Canadians to not only the Belfast, but to the British Royal Navy in general!

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned about my project was how much of an impact Candians had on the British Royal Navy. I never would have imagined that there could be so many Candians aboard, or even being sent to British ships for training. However, above all of that I think what amazes me the most is that the HMS Belfast actually supported D-Day landings on Juno Beach, which I had always thought was solely Candians.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

While doing this project I realized how good Canadians have it today. After learning about everything that went on during the wars and how young some of the men were it makes me appreciate what we have and the fact that fortunately we don't have to go through anything of the sort. I also learned just how many innocent people die during wars, no matter what side they were fighting for, and if we would learn to just stop fighting none of that would go on.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Even after learning about how young some men, such as my grandfather, were when they joined the war I still cannot imagine going through something like that. I will be 16 in two years and if someone told me that I have to go out to war and fight for Canada I don't think I'd be able to do it; however, back when WW2 was approaching that's what many young men wanted to do.
