Jeunes Citoyens / Young Citizens

Tamika Charlo, New Brunswick

Fair address: Anglophone North Regional Heritage Fair (Belledune)

Project: Mi'gmaq Culture

This project is a glimpse into some of the traditions and ceremonies of the Mi'gmaq people. These traditions are being shared with Native and Non-native people alike to honour and respect our culture into the 21st century. I was fortunate to have visited the Metepenagiag (Red Bank, NB) Heritage Park, the Ugpi'ganjig (Eel River Bar) Pow Wow grounds and interview members of the community of Listuguj.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

One of the most important things I learned about my topic is the true meaning of the Honor Song written by George Paul. I am also proud to have received an autographed book written by Elder George Paul.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned the importance of learning about my First Nations Culture so that the language and traditions are not lost.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I realize that my elders have worked hard to preserve our culture and traditions. I feel very honoured that they are able to teach me about my Culture be it in my school or community something that was not always accepted in the past.
